Pepitas, a Love Story

WHY WE 💚 PEPITAS (aka Pumpkin Seeds)

IMG_8175.JPG

We LOVE these powerful green seeds so much we put Organic Pepitas in everything we make!

TINY BUT MIGHTY: Often referred to as a nutritional powerhouse, pepitas, contain a wide variety of nutrients ranging from magnesium (37% RDI*)  and manganese (42% RDI*) to copper (19% RDI), protein and zinc (14% RDI* ) . They also contain plant compounds known as phytosterols and free-radical scavenging antioxidants, and are loaded with essential fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6. And if that wasn’t enough they can also help you have good vibes and maybe even catch a few more winks.   *based on a 1 ounce serving, RDI = Recommended Daily Intake

GOOD VIBES: Pepitas are dietary source of tryptophan (yes like turkey) which the body uses to make a chemical called 5-hydroxytryptophan aka 5-HTP. Once converted to 5-HTP, it is converted to another chemical called Serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps relay signals between brain cells. Since serotonin helps regulate mood and behavior, research has shown 5-HTP may have a positive effect on sleep, mood, anxiety, appetite, and pain sensation.

PEPITAS BY THE NUMBERS: There are approximately 150 calories in an ounce (28 grams) of pepitas, mainly from fat and protein.

In addition, a 1-oz (28-gram) serving contains

  • Fiber: 1.7 grams.

  • Carbs: 5 grams.

  • Protein: 7 grams.

  • Fat: 13 grams

  • Vitamin K: 18% of the RDI.

  • Phosphorous: 33% of the RDI.

  • Manganese: 42% of the RDI.

  • Magnesium: 37% of the RDI.

  • Iron: 23% of the RDI.

  • Zinc: 14% of the RDI.

  • Copper: 19% of the RDI.

They also contain lots of antioxidants and a considerable amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids, potassium, vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and folate.

ONE MORE THING: Did you know Pepitas come from a specific type of pumpkins known as “oilseed“ or Styrian pumpkins? While part of the same squash family “oilseed” pumpkins are a distinct variety from the cultivar most commonly used for carving jack-o-lanterns, with the most notable difference being there hull-less (naked) green seed.

Sharing Eater.com's list of 22 Stellar Gluten-Free Restaurants in Chicago

IMG_4818.JPG

Hi Gluten Free friends in Chicago! The folks over at Eater.com put together an awesome list of 22 stellar Gluten-Free restaurants in Chicago that we bookmarked and wanted to share!  As a Celiac I know first hand that even though restaurants are more accommodating than ever to those on a gluten-free diet, there are still plenty of challenges when dining out and that safe options can still be very limited.

We have been to some of the restaurants on the list (and can attest to their greatness),  but many are new to us.  Since menus, staffing and kitchen practices can change frequently we recommend calling ahead. And always make sure to talk with your waiter and let them know your needs. We have learned the hard way mever to assume something that should be gluten free is gluten free when dining out.

We hope you enjoy the list and hope to post more about our favorite gluten free dining options soon. We'd love to hear where your favorite spots are too!
